What is Lie Angle?

Answer: Lie angle is defined as the centerline of the shaft with the ground line tangent to the sole at the face center line.

Lie angles are described as too upright, too flat or correct. A lie angle that is too upright will cause the ball to be hit left of the target and a lie that is too flat, the ball will be hit right of the target (for a right handed golfer). Here is an example that might help visualize the concept. Assume you have a 115 yd 9 iron shot to the green and the shot is executed correctly. With the club 4º upright (Assuming the 4 degree upright lie is 4 degree to upright) the ball would be hit 22ft left of the intended target. This could easily cause you to miss the green completely. That’s why lie is an important factor in proper fitting.
