If a graphite shaft is more expensive is it always better?
This is a common question and the answer is no. For example, if an average amateur golfer grabbed John Daly's Penley Shaft (Retails around $150) it would play awful for their game. Granted the modulus graphite that is used on John Daly's shaft is very expensive with very low torque and a very stiff tip. However, if the average golfer were to play that shaft with a 100 mile per hour swing speed compared to John Daly's 140 mile per hour swing speed it would be a horrible fit for the average golfer. The average golfer would lose distance and the ball would go low right and slice, but for John Daly the shaft is perfect. In summary, unless you have a very high club head speed, a shaft under $50.00 is more than adequete. If you do have a high swing speed you will have to use a more expensive shaft because the modulus needed to get the torque very low, the tip very stiff, and the weight in the 60-70 gram range is very expensive.
