Hi,
I recently went to my local Golfsmith to test out some irons. Every online static fitter indicates that I should be using irons with +.25" and 1 degree upright. With standard length and lie I hit square off the lie tester board but I only got one go at it and I'm suspect of the quality of the attention my fitter gave me.
It turns out I think I really like the Ping G10's and am obviously therefore looking for clones for their value. My real question is if I'm already hitting square, is it worth getting these minor length and lie adjustments suited to my build? I wouldn't mind saving 30 dollars more if I don't have to adjust the lie.
They say the static fittings assume an ideal swing but how much could I possibly be compensating for a quarter of an inch? |

Bobalu,
There are a couple of things to think about when it comes to making adjustments golf clubs. The first is that when you get a height measurement and a wrist to floor this will give you a length and lie recommendation. This would be flawless if we all addressed the ball the same and we all made the same golf swing. So just because you are a certain height and have a certain wrist to floor doesn't mean you can stop there. I always fit a golfer first off those numbers then I give them a club that fits those numbers. Then I have them swing that club and see how they address the ball and how there swing path is and where the club contacts the ground using a lie board. The length that you get based on your height and wrist to floor measurement is usually going to be correct unless you stand up very upright or or hunch over. However the lie can change greatly depending on the golfer and the swing path. Long story short I recommend getting the clubs the 1/4 inch long and hitting them for a few rounds and then have the lie checked. The lie can always be adjusted after the fact. Feel free to give me call if you have any other questions and I will be happy to talk you through it some more.
Thanks,
Jeff |

Good input. So according to the fitter at Golfsmith I hit the ball square of the lie board with standard length and lie. Truth be told the clubs i hit that were a quarter inch longer did not feel as comfortable
I still wonder whether my swing might evolve more purely with the length and lie recommended by static fitting systems, leading me to believe that in the long run I'd be better off getting the adjustments made and letting my natural swing compensate.
Or not, and that is why I'm posting here lol. |

My main point is to make sure that the length is correct because that is going to be very important. If looking to become better and work on your game I would recommend getting the lie adjusted to where swing dictates. This is because if you are playing clubs that are ill fit for you and you hit a great shot that goes right at the pin and felt great.... Your doing something wrong in your golf swing in order to compensate for the clubs not being to your specs. In short when I hit a great shot I want to know it's because I made a good swing not a good compensation because my clubs aren't fit to my specs.
Thanks,
Jeff |
