Driver Shaft Suggestion

Howdy - Looking for some input for a soon-to-be first-time club builder. I want to build, among a few other things, a new driver. I current have a 2007 TM Burner with a stiff shaft that I hit very well, but I am intrigued by square head drivers and I want to try one out.

My TM is a 9.5 degree with a stiff shaft. Prior to the TM (which I bought this year) I was was using the 8.5 degree Callaway Hawkeye Pro with a 3.1 stiff shaft. The Hawkeye I hit all ove rthe course, never could get any consistency. The TM is an entire different story. Very straight with a slight draw. My problem with all my drivers is that I balloon my drives. I have been put on a few swing computers and told my driver backspin is 5,000+ RPM and that I have a very steep approach. My swing clubhead speed is in the 95-100 mph range, and I generally carry about 240ish yards with very little roll.

I have been told by a few folks that I would greatly benefit from a heavier shaft than the ultralight in the Burner, and perhaps something with a little less torque.

For the sakes of this driver I plan to build (the FT-iq clone), is there a reasonably priced shaft(s) I should consider to help drop spin and flatten out my driver's ball flight?

A reasonably priced shaft that would address your concerns would be a UST Proforce V2. Good solid shaft that comes in a bunch of different weights and flexes. I believe it sells for around $70. I play the UST AXIVCore Black ($140) and its one of the smoothest shafts I've ever played. Has a nice medium ball flight with little spin. Might be a little out of your price range, but if you have a little extra to spend, its worth it.

Thanks for the heads up. I will definitely check those shafts out. Just in browsing the DTG site, I saw the FGA MOI shaft that seems low torque. Jeff, would this be a decent option to consider as well, given my swing specs?

You are correct with the going with a slightly heavier shaft will bring better results. This is simply because when you go with a lighter gram weight shaft they don't handle club head speed as well and the lighter the shaft the higher the torque as well. If you want a great bang for the buck shaft that would perform well for what your looking to do I would recommend the FGS MOI shaft which we have on sale for $14.95. It's 68 grams, has very low torque, and a mid kick point. Please see the link below.
