What is Torque?

Shaft Torque is defined as the amount of twisting of a shaft around its axis. Normally the lower the torque the stiffer the shaft and vice versa. Graphite shafts normally have more torque than steel. In fact manufacturers don’t even list torque measurement for steel. Generally if you use a shaft that is too stiff, (lower torque, firmer feel), you will leave the ball to the right and low (for right handed player). If a shaft has too weak of a torque, (higher torque, greater flexibility) the ball will hook. Please remember this is predicated on the assumption that the player is swinging exactly on plane to square at impact. Another thing to keep in mind is that as driver heads get larger and clubs are constructed longer the more torque or twisting is placed on the shaft. If you’re getting a 450-650cc sized head you would want approximately ½º lower torque than for a 300cc head. As well, a longer club will affect torque.
